From the marina supply run to late-night victories under the string-lit tarp—here is how the weekend unfolded.
Every serious expedition starts at the local bait & tackle shop under the blessing of a taxidermy raccoon paddling a canoe. From there, we loaded the boats to the gunwales, threaded through Lake Marion's flooded cypress forest, and executed a textbook dry-boot piggyback transfer onto the island sandbar.
Within an hour of landing, the island point transformed into a self-sustaining compound. Tents and hammock tarps went up between the pines, Old Glory was hoisted center-stage, firewood was processed with a pocket-sized cordless mini-chainsaw, and the campfire coals were turbo-charged with a battery-powered Bosch blower (#CampLikeABosch).
Nobody went hungry on the island. The stone fire ring ran two-zone cooking around the clock: massive grates of bone-in chicken quarters crisping over hardwood coals, caramelized fajita peppers and golden quesadillas on the flat-top griddle, and foil pans of mac & cheese.
Down at the water's edge, the white-sand shoreline hosted a multi-day cornhole tournament right beside the beached jon boats. And because being on an uninhabited island is no excuse to miss kickoff, we deployed a portable power station and rugged outdoor TV rig to stream Saturday football live under the cypress trees.
Once the sun dipped below the Lake Marion horizon in a blaze of crimson and gold, the main shelter tarp lit up like an stadium. Folding tables came out for high-stakes night cup battles before everyone settled into camp chairs around the fire ring with cigars and late-night stories.
